Data snapshot 3 October 2026, planning for 2027
Eighteen markets, 5,614 considered venues, one dated extract. Every market is placed by the same two measures: how many venues reached our considered list and how widely they are spread across the country. How fully those venues are documented sits beside the map as a descriptor.

What real choice means
Real choice means enough credible venues, in enough places, with enough information to compare them properly. A long list is not enough on its own. If every option sits around one city, couples who want to marry somewhere else have fewer real options. If venues are hard to verify, a long list is harder to use.
So we measure three things for each market. Scale is the number of venues that reached our considered list after research. Spread is how much of that list sits in the three regions with the most venues, with the number of regions needed to cover 80% of venues shown beside it. Information is how fully each venue is documented. Scale and spread place each market on the map; information describes it.
The United States: scale and breadth
The United States has the longest considered list in the study: 1,699 venues. It is also the most evenly spread. The top three states, California, Texas and Colorado, hold 16.4% of considered venues between them.
It takes 34 of 50 states to account for 80% of the venues. That breadth gives couples meaningful choice across much of the country, not only around the largest cities.

Smaller markets
Germany is the largest of the smaller markets and substantial in its own right. It sits below the break because the next markets up, Canada and Japan, are much larger.
In Australia and South Africa the venues cluster in the most populous states and provinces. Denmark, Iceland and Morocco are concentrated partly because their regional systems are small: Denmark has five regions and Iceland six. Morocco's list leans on Marrakesh-Safi.
That is why regions needed to reach 80% sits beside the top three share as the second read of spread: it counts how many regions hold most of the list, which offsets the different ways countries divide themselves into regions.

Information: the third part of real choice
The third test is whether couples can compare venues properly. We record six evidence signals for each considered venue. Iceland has the highest average, 4.87 of six; Austria has the lowest, at 4.09.
The highest evidence scores belong to smaller markets. Iceland (4.87, with 25% of venues showing all six signals), Morocco (4.77, 41.1%) and Denmark (4.58, 20.4%) are among the most fully documented markets in the study. A shorter, concentrated list can still be easy to compare when every option is well evidenced.
The US list averages 4.13 signals per venue. Because the list is so long, that still means 639 US venues show five or six signals (37.6%), more than in any other market on the map. In all, eight markets reach the high band: Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, South Africa, Denmark, Morocco and Iceland.

Wedding markets in context
National statistics give useful context about the size of each wedding market. Germany recorded 348,813 marriages in 2025, nearly five times the Netherlands' 70,141, but national wedding volume is not the same thing as the amount or distribution of usable venue choice.
The same holds at the top of the map. Japan recorded 489,158 marriages in 2025, about a quarter of the 2,041,926 the United States recorded in 2023, yet both are Large and broad.
Some weddings also take place in another country. Statbel reports that 9% of the 48,589 marriages it recorded for Belgian residents in 2024 were celebrated abroad.

How far our research narrowed each list
Every list starts wider than it ends. In the US, 1,699 considered venues came from a researched pool of at least 44,000; in Germany, 310 from at least 5,000; in Iceland, 68 from a counted pool of 143. Selectivity is a research process measure only. The full table is in the method notes.
What this means for couples
Start with where you want to marry, then check how the venues are spread. In the US, Japan and the ten smaller but broad markets, the considered list covers much of the country. In Canada, Australia and South Africa, the deepest fields sit in a few states or provinces. In Denmark, Iceland and Morocco, the list is shorter and gathered in a few regions, but very well documented.
Each market's ranking shows the full published list: United States, Japan, Canada, Germany, Belgium and Austria are a good place to start, and rankings by market covers the rest. Ranking order never depends on price, as How we rank explains.
